Newman, C. (2000). Women photographers at national geographic. Washington, D.C. National Geographic Society.
Women Photographers at National Geographic is an oversize photography book published by the National Geographic Society in 2000. The book was the first published by National Geographic to focus on solely on its female photographers. The book’s 250+ pages includes color and black and white photography dating back to the early 1900s. While the book briefly covers the history of women in photography it focuses more closely on the work and experiences of National Geographic’s photographers themselves. The photographic work and writing is broken up into five sections and also includes additional reading, photographer’s biographies, and an index. National Geographic is one of the largest nonprofit scientific and educational institutions in the world and has been in existence since 1888. It is considered the “dream job” by many young photographers and journalists. While this resource only covers the work of a very small set of women in the photojournalism field, it offers first-hand accounts from women working in one of the profession’s most well-known and highly visible publications.
